Clifford's first foray into the world of music began when he was still a teenager. Feeling excluded from school and suffering from loneliness and isolation, Clifford began tinkering on the school piano and at home, where he composed heartfelt songs and instrumentals. Upon visiting a Mind, Body and Spirit exhibition in the early 80's, Clifford spotted a catalogue from the record label New World Music, and immediately recognised that this record company was the perfect home for his new compositions. He posted off his cassette and was immediately signed by the label. His collection of instrumental pieces become the album Ascension, which went on to sell more than 50,000 copies.
